Ceramic Coating Aftercare
Essential instructions to maximize the protection and longevity of your ceramic coating.
The Critical First 7 Days
The first week after your ceramic coating application is the most important period. During this time, the coating is curing and bonding to your vehicle's paint. Proper care during this window is essential for maximum durability and performance.
Days 1-7: Curing Period
No washing of any kind — This includes hand washing, pressure washing, and automatic car washes.
Avoid water exposure — If possible, park under cover to avoid rain or sprinklers. If the vehicle does get wet from rain, don't panic — just let it air dry naturally.
No touching the paint — Avoid wiping, buffing, or applying any products to the coated surfaces.
Keep it clean and dry — Park in a garage or covered area when possible.
Why This Matters
Ceramic coatings need time to fully cure and create a strong chemical bond with your paint. Water, soap, or physical contact during this period can interfere with the curing process and reduce the coating's effectiveness and longevity.
After the Curing Period (Day 8+)
Washing Your Coated Vehicle
Once the initial 7-day curing period is complete, you can begin washing your vehicle. However, how you wash matters significantly for coating longevity.
DO
- Hand wash using the two-bucket method
- Use pH-neutral car shampoo
- Use clean, high-quality microfiber wash mitts and towels
- Wash in the shade or when the surface is cool
- Rinse thoroughly before and after washing
- Dry with clean microfiber drying towels
- Wash regularly (every 1-2 weeks) to prevent contaminant buildup
DON'T
- Use touch-based car washes (brushes, cloths, foam brushes)
- Use harsh chemicals, abrasives, or wax/polish removers
- Use bug & tar removers that could degrade the coating
- Wash in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces
- Let water spots dry on the surface
- Use dirty towels or mitts that can scratch
Pro Tip: Touch-Free Car Washes
If you must use an automatic car wash, wait at least 7-14 days after coating application and only use touchless/touch-free washes (high-pressure, chemical-only systems like Charley's Car Wash). Even then, hand washing at home is always preferred for the best results and longest coating life.
Permanent Care Guidelines
Always Avoid Touch-Based Car Washes
For the entire life of your ceramic coating, you should permanently avoid all touch-based car washes, including:
- Automatic washes with spinning brushes or cloth strips
- Soft-touch car washes
- Self-service bays with foam brushes
- Any wash that makes physical contact with your paint
These can introduce micro-scratches, swirl marks, and damage that will diminish your coating's appearance and protection over time.
Ongoing Maintenance Checklist
- Wash every 1-2 weeks — Regular washing prevents contaminant buildup that can bond to and degrade the coating over time.
- Use only pH-neutral products — Avoid acidic or alkaline cleaners, degreasers, and all-purpose cleaners on coated surfaces.
- Remove bird droppings and tree sap promptly — These are acidic and can etch through the coating if left too long. Clean within 24-48 hours when possible.
- Avoid parking under trees — Reduces exposure to sap, bird droppings, and other organic fallout.
- Use a ceramic-safe spray sealant — Optional: Apply a ceramic boost spray every few months for added protection and refreshed water beading.
- Inspect and maintain — Periodically check water beading behavior. Strong beading indicates a healthy coating.
What to Expect from Your Coating
Benefits You'll Enjoy
- Hydrophobic properties — Water will bead and sheet off the surface, making drying faster and reducing water spots.
- Easier cleaning — Dirt, grime, and contaminants won't bond as strongly, making washing quicker and more effective.
- UV protection — The coating provides a barrier against UV rays that cause oxidation and fading.
- Chemical resistance — Better protection against environmental contaminants, acid rain, and road chemicals.
- Enhanced gloss — A deep, reflective shine that enhances your paint's appearance.
What Your Coating Won't Do
While ceramic coatings provide excellent protection, it's important to have realistic expectations:
- Not scratch-proof — The coating adds a sacrificial layer but won't prevent scratches from improper washing or physical impacts.
- Not maintenance-free — Regular washing and proper care are still required for optimal performance.
- Not permanent — Durability depends on maintenance, environment, and care. Even the best coatings degrade over time.
- Won't fix existing damage — The coating goes over your paint; it won't fill or hide existing scratches or swirl marks.
Quick Reference Timeline
Day 1-7
No washing, no water exposure, no touching the paint. Park under cover if possible.
Day 7-14
You may hand wash with pH-neutral soap. Avoid automatic car washes during this period.
Day 14+
Touch-free automatic washes are acceptable if needed. Hand washing is always preferred.
Ongoing
Wash every 1-2 weeks. Never use touch-based car washes. Remove contaminants promptly. Use only pH-neutral products.
